The Zone September/October Activity Report
Club re-opened on September 15th. We had two open events to accommodate all those who wanted to visit with over 400 people attending. There was a fantastic atmosphere and everyone seemed really impressed and very happy with the work that had taken place over the summer.
Since opening we have had over 900 children attending club – ranging from
ages 5 to 18.

Classes on Wednesdays attract up to 10 5-8 yr olds. We were joined recently by a new volunteer in the art class and 2 more A’level student volunteers will be joining us after The Yom Tavim. The children have used the new iZone mac suite to make videos of them reading the news! Other activities have included making ‘big’ glasses and flags.
Art & Culture
Poland trip planned for February half term. We have 15, 15 year olds signed up for the trip and only 5 places left. We are delighted to have joined forces with Makor again to offer this trip and that Arik Hersh is joining us on the trip.

The Israeli film Club is back!
This is a synopsis of the film from Showcase Cinemas website:
In a kibbutz in the 1970s, Dvir, a 12 year old boy faces the harsh demands
of the collective while struggling to make room for, and bring happiness to, his
emotionally unstable mother. Without a father around and living away from his
mother in the children's house, Dvir is determined to help his mother find
solace and start a new life.
Based on the personal memories of writer-director Dror Shaul, this accomplished film cuts through the romantic idea of the kibbutz, focusing on the individual struggle to find love and fulfilment within the rigid rules of this community.
One of the most impressive productions of recent Israeli cinema (and selected to represent Israel at the Oscars) the film comes to this - its UK premiere - with a handful of prestigious international awards. With an outstanding cast and great visual beauty, Sweet Mud reveals the complexity of its characters' lives reverberating under the surface of an impressive pastoral landscape.
For further details contact our community's Shaliach from Israel Asaf Segev. He can be reached at asaf@makor.co.uk

Press release... bar/batmitzvah event
On Sunday 5th October, 31 children of bar and batmitzvah age attended “Goin’ Back to Your Roots”. This was the first of three sessions being run by Leeds Jewish Representative Council as part of their “Welcome to the Community” project and was a great success. The children, from across the community’s spectrum, hopped on board a coach that took them back to where the Jews lived when they first came to Leeds. They heard Robert Bartfield explain how Jews escaping Czarist Russia ended up in Leeds, and the life that they made for themselves. Moving up to Chapeltown, they were held in rapt attention as Michael Lee described what it was like to live, go to school and grow up there. Not only did the attendees learn about the history of Leeds but the roots of the community, as it is today, were brought vividly to life. They were then treated to shwarma, sausage and chips at Leeds’ very own community centre!
The “Welcome to the Community” project is designed to help bar/batmitzvah children feel a warm and valued part of our community. The children not only learn about community life, its institutions and its history; but get to socialise and form friendships with other children of the same age across congregational boundaries. This first session was judged to be a great success with positive comments from children and parents alike. It was the first time that such an event, organised by community development worker Neil Clarke, has ever been run. There is a great anticipation for the next session.

At the end they got the opportunity to do a little quiz/ activity sheet on what they had learned. If you click here then you can have a look at the sheet. Why not have a go at it?
