Leeds' Personalities: Montague Burton

The founder of Burton's Menswear (and offshoots such as Topman) were started by Montague Burton who was a committed Leeds Jew. Here are a few short facts about him:

  • Born Moshe David Orsinsky, he lived in Lithuania and for many years attended Slobodka
    Yeshiva
  • Arriving in England in 1896 with no English, he very quickly set up his first shop in Chesterfield
  • By 1922 he had 40 shops and opened a factory in Hudson Road
  • Head of Leeds Zionist Council, president of Leeds Talmud Torah and Judean Club and Life President of Harrogate Synagogue
  • Has a Leeds University Halls named after him
