Collection for WellFair Shop- 16th Nov

As part of 'Mitzvah Day' on Sunday 16th November, volunteers will be knocking on your door collecting for 'thewellfairshop': the Jewish community's very own charity shop!!!! Money raised from the sale of the items will go to the Leeds Jewish Welfare Board. Look at http://www.ljwb.co.uk/ to see all the great work that the welfare board does which includes Neshama, the Manny Cussins Family Project, Rainbow, Moorcare and Leeds Jewish Blind Society. It is a very worthy cause!

Please help on the 16th by finding unwanted items such as ladies, gents and childrens' clothing; handbags, bric-a-brac; books; CDs; DVDs; and toys and getting them ready for collection. Indeed, why not be one of the volunteers that goes door-to-door helping to collect?

To find out more about the different ways that you can help on Mitzvah Day contact Sara Cross on sarasaunders@aol.com or 07768367955

The Zone September/October Activity Report

Opening/Club Nights
Club re-opened on September 15th. We had two open events to accommodate all those who wanted to visit with over 400 people attending. There was a fantastic atmosphere and everyone seemed really impressed and very happy with the work that had taken place over the summer.
Since opening we have had over 900 children attending club – ranging from
ages 5 to 18.

Karate
Class began the first week of re – opening. We have some new members and are attracting up to 25 children a week. Many have their Yellow Belts and are working their way through the colour chart!

Junior Football (Mini Maccabi)
Boys football is still very popular 2 full classes running on a Monday Night feeding into the Maccabi teams. Simon Brown still running the club with help from our Leadership volunteers. Our brand new football for girls also started this term and we now have 8-10 girls regularly attending. The class is run by two new A’level student volunteers Hannah Schiffeldren and Holly Harris.

Dinky Drama & Art
Classes on Wednesdays attract up to 10 5-8 yr olds. We were joined recently by a new volunteer in the art class and 2 more A’level student volunteers will be joining us after The Yom Tavim. The children have used the new iZone mac suite to make videos of them reading the news! Other activities have included making ‘big’ glasses and flags.

Art & Culture
Poland trip planned for February half term. We have 15, 15 year olds signed up for the trip and only 5 places left. We are delighted to have joined forces with Makor again to offer this trip and that Arik Hersh is joining us on the trip.

Raina and Rabbi Kleiman have been discussing various Chag activities and are looking at hosting a ‘Chanukah family day’ to be held at The Zone.

The Maccabi Torch Relay will also be running Chanukah activities on
December 8th at The Zone. Please let us know if you would like to host any Israeli teenagers for a couple of nights!

Gymnastics
Gymnastics is back on Thursdays! 3 full classes run by Estelle. Generation Zone, our Grandma’s committee are raising money at their next coffee morning to raise money towards new gym equipment. The older advanced class are going to be working towards entering competitions.

Plans are underway to re-start the intercity sports competition; “The David Clayman Trophy”. Suggestions for this year’s sports are Football together with Leeds Maccabi, Gymnastics, Golf and Table Tennis – in partnership with Leeds Judean Table Tennis. The competition will be run jointly by The Zone and Manchester Maccabi Center. There is a possibility of inviting Liverpool to join in and an invitation has been sent to the new Harold House manager Steve Simpson to join discussions..

Leadership
25 New Year 10’s have joined the Zone Leadership Course this year. Sessions scheduled include Disability, Drug addiction, Theoretical Leadership, Child Protection and Zionist/Israeli issues. Getting to know your community will be our central theme.

Our older volunteer group, made up of previous Leadership students continues to grow in number. Their help with activities and club nights is invaluable. Some of them are hoping to open Café Chai for adults on a Wednesday afternoon during which adults will be able to learn to use an apple mac and receive extra internet/computer coaching.

Streetsound
Participants have started to make adverts for Zone led activities. More and more of our members are getting involved in the project as we now have 3 volunteers leading programmes from Leeds College of Music and we are working with Radio Jcom.

Fashion & Culture
We began this new activity in September and it is proving popular with our 15/16 year old girls. The aim is to design and produce their own clothes using the art room and the iZone suite whilst discovering what really is important when it comes to fashion and why is it so important in people’s lives.

The Israeli film Club is back!

The "Israeli Film Club" is putting on a showing of the award winning film- SWEET MUD- at 8 p.m. on the 23rd October. It will take place the the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Community Centre and it is free!

This is a synopsis of the film from Showcase Cinemas website:

In a kibbutz in the 1970s, Dvir, a 12 year old boy faces the harsh demands
of the collective while struggling to make room for, and bring happiness to, his
emotionally unstable mother. Without a father around and living away from his
mother in the children's house, Dvir is determined to help his mother find
solace and start a new life.

Based on the personal memories of writer-director Dror Shaul, this accomplished film cuts through the romantic idea of the kibbutz, focusing on the individual struggle to find love and fulfilment within the rigid rules of this community.

One of the most impressive productions of recent Israeli cinema (and selected to represent Israel at the Oscars) the film comes to this - its UK premiere - with a handful of prestigious international awards. With an outstanding cast and great visual beauty, Sweet Mud reveals the complexity of its characters' lives reverberating under the surface of an impressive pastoral landscape.

Press release... bar/batmitzvah event

PRESS RELEASE

On Sunday 5th October, 31 children of bar and batmitzvah age attended “Goin’ Back to Your Roots”. This was the first of three sessions being run by Leeds Jewish Representative Council as part of their “Welcome to the Community” project and was a great success. The children, from across the community’s spectrum, hopped on board a coach that took them back to where the Jews lived when they first came to Leeds. They heard Robert Bartfield explain how Jews escaping Czarist Russia ended up in Leeds, and the life that they made for themselves. Moving up to Chapeltown, they were held in rapt attention as Michael Lee described what it was like to live, go to school and grow up there. Not only did the attendees learn about the history of Leeds but the roots of the community, as it is today, were brought vividly to life. They were then treated to shwarma, sausage and chips at Leeds’ very own community centre!

The “Welcome to the Community” project is designed to help bar/batmitzvah children feel a warm and valued part of our community. The children not only learn about community life, its institutions and its history; but get to socialise and form friendships with other children of the same age across congregational boundaries. This first session was judged to be a great success with positive comments from children and parents alike. It was the first time that such an event, organised by community development worker Neil Clarke, has ever been run. There is a great anticipation for the next session.

Local MP will open Mitzvah Day

BREAKING NEWS (almost- I actually knew on Friday!)

Fabian Hamilton M.P. will be opening 'Mitzvah Day' for us at the MAZ centre, 11 a.m., on the 16th November.

'Mitzvah Day UK' is the largest day of mass social action in the Jewish Calendar in the UK. Watch out for all the activities that we will be putting on in Leeds. It will truly be a cross-communal event suitable for all ages, denominations etc

History of Leeds---- Quiz!

Yesterday, we held a very successful event for bar and batmitzvah aged children. In the end we got 31 children which must be very close to 50% of the whole year. They learned a bit about the history of the Leeds' Jewish community and then had chance to have shwarma, sausage and chips! I will post a review (or 'press release' so I shall call it!) of the event very shortly.

At the end they got the opportunity to do a little quiz/ activity sheet on what they had learned. If you click here then you can have a look at the sheet. Why not have a go at it? Unfortunately, you will not get the free meal at "The Vine" or the 'Zavvi' voucher but you might have a bit of fun anyway.

October's JLife

I'm a bit slow off the mark with this one, but the October JLife is out. If you haven't seen it already it can be picked up from Donisthorpe, The Kosherie, David Lloyd, Chalutz, Headfirst, The Zone, MAZ Centre, Street Lane Dental and Bagel Nash.

This issue contains:

  • News from the community
  • Ready, Steady, Go-ing forward- the buildup to next year's Judean club reunion
  • All the action in Chapel Allerton- a look at Chapel Allerton and its various shops
  • St Petersburg: Past and Present- a close up on St. Petersburg's thriving Jewish community
  • Happy Days are here again!- Rabbi Garber on Succot
  • The Jews of LS6- a focus on the student community in Leeds
  • Back to the future- Interview in focus with Simon Harris, the ZOne's new operations manager
  • ...and lots more with lifestyle, fashion, body matters and film reviews

Rabbi Shalom Hammer

This Sunday (5th October) at 10.30 a.m. you will have the opportunity to hear a very special speaker at the MAZ Centre. Rabbi Shalom Hammer, BHH's scholar-in-residence for the high holidays, will be speaking to the whole community about "Ensuring Survival - A vision of hope for the State of Israel". Below is a little information about Rabbi Hammer from his website http://www.rabbihammer.com/:

Rabbi Shalom Hammer has had the unique experience of having served as a Rabbi in the United States, and Educator in Israeli institutions and a Chaplain for the Israeli Defense Forces. He was sent numerous times to deliver classes to the Jews in the former Soviet Union and he has also led groups of American students through the fallen Jewish communities of Eastern Europe. These experiences provide Rabbi Hammer with distinct and profound insight on pertinent issues confronting the Jewish world both in Israel and the Diaspora

Don't miss this opportunity. There will be a suggested donation of £5
